How to Find the Right Abuse Contact
Sending a takedown notice to the wrong recipient is the single most common reason notices get ignored. Three different parties can be involved in any given case, and they're not interchangeable.
The platform. If the content lives on a social network, marketplace, or user-generated content site (Instagram, Etsy, TikTok, and similar), that platform's own copyright reporting tool is almost always the fastest path, since they already have a legal intake process built for exactly this situation.
The registrar. This is the company that sold the infringing domain name. Registrars can suspend a domain in cases of clear, repeated abuse, but most won't act on a single straightforward copyright dispute — that's the host's job, not theirs.
The host. This is the company whose servers actually store the infringing site's files. It's usually who you want for an independent website that isn't hosted on a platform. One thing worth knowing: a CDN like Cloudflare is often not the actual host, it just proxies traffic in front of the real server, so reporting to Cloudflare alone frequently won't get content removed. Use a WHOIS lookup or a tool like urlscan.io to identify the true origin server first.
Getting this right matters because the DMCA's safe-harbor obligations only apply to the entity actually storing or transmitting the content. Sending a notice to a party with no legal removal obligation just costs you time while the content stays up.

Evidence Gathering Checklist
Do this before you submit, so the page can't be edited to hide the infringement:
- Full, uncropped screenshots showing the address bar and the infringing content together.
- Exact timestamps and timezone, plus any file names or signatures.
- A saved capture via the Wayback Machine or Archive.ph.
